The essence of Ciaccona

In 1720, after the sudden death of his wife Maria Barbara, Johann Sebastian Bach composed the Partita Solo for violin in D-minor, of which the last movement is the Ciaccona. In this unique last movement according to the latest knowledge of musicology, chorals are hidden that revolve around the subject of death and resurrection. Together with the concert guitarist Martina Schäffer, the Ciaccona essence painting is created during the performance at the Sacellum in Salzburg during the opening of the exhibition Art for a Better World on August 4th 2020. Emmerich Weissenberger paints live a “transformative work of art” to the sounds, the world premiere of Ciaccona by J. S. Bach on ukulele. By repeating the performance, the work of Art transforms and touches the different levels of this piece of music in it´s complexity.

The Coronation Cycle

The Coronation cycle, consisting of three pictures, describes the artist‘s vision, a personal experience of “inner coronation”. The first artwork of this cycle My King are written the words „Peace be with you my new King“. This is a reminiscence of the image of the „inner coronation“ of human kind standing upright. The vibrating colored areas are interspersed with seals from the Revelation of John. The central themes of this cycle are death and resurrection, fall and reposition.

Coronation cycle / Weissenberger / 2020 / oil tempera on timber, gold- and silver leaf / 250 x 250

The second picture of the cycle, Weissenberger is a kind of self-portrait. An abstracted figure (the artist himself) is crouched on a white mountain with his hands open to the sky, surrounded by signs of human companions. He wears a corona crown, also a symbol for the opportunity of development of humans in the pandemic.

Coronation cycle / The 4th Seal / 2020 / oil tempera on timber, gold- and silver leaf / 250 x 250

The 4th seal shows a couple in loving union, around them other people seem to fly through the room. The couple is accompanied on the left by „the old“, personified by an old woman, and on the right by „the new“ in the form of a boy. Kabbalistic signs shimmer between the figures and open a second hidden level.
